Geriatric Research Directives

The maintenance of cardiac and skeletal muscle function essential to maintaining a high quality of life. Research in our laboratory regarding the area of muscle adaptation is currently focused on three different areas of inquiry: Effect of age on skeletal muscle mass and function Sarcopenia is the age associated loss of muscle mass and function that if allowed to proceed unchecked can lead to institutionalization. The incidence of this disorder is increasing rapidly as more and more of the world's population is living longer and longer. Research efforts within our lab are currently focused on unraveling the mechanism behind the muscle loss associated with aging using the F344XBN animal model and the nematode C. elegans.
