LEARNING OUTCOME EXPECTED: This course is designed to acquaint the student with the rules of the Code of Federal Regulations., Title 49. The course will focus on a variety of aspects that make up a good Hazardous Materials Transportation program. In addition, it will cover the techniques needed to develop shipping and packaging programs and the skill needed by drivers, carriers handling hazardous materials. Moreover, the course will develop the skills needed to insure the correct actions to prevent HAZMAT incidents.
EVALUATION AND MEASUREMENT OF STUDENT PROGRESS: The student will be responsible for both lecture and textbook material. The lecture material will not necessarily follow the reading assignment, listed on the course outline. Therefore, the student should take good lecture notes and review these notes when preparing for quizzes. Lecture and reading assignment material will be covered in the quizzes. A term paper about a topic listed in the course outline(or another topic about Hazardous Materials Transportation that is approved by the instructor) will be required. The first draft of this paper is due by week seven (7) of the course. The final term paper is due no later than the eleventh (11) week of the course. Late papers will receive a lower grade based on the following schedule: one day to one week, one letter grade; eight days to two weeks, two letter grades; greater than two weeks will result in a failing grade. The term papers are expected to be consistent with good scholarship and should reflect research by the student well beyond the Internet. A bibliography of no less then 12 references is required, not including your text. The method of citations and bibliography is the Chicago Manual of Style format. This format can be found on the Internet. The paper needs to be a minimum of ten (10) pages in length for undergraduates. Graduate students in the class will be expected to give a 15 minute oral presentation of the subject matter covered in their term paper and their paper will need to be a minimum of fifteen (15) pages in length. Just reading the paper for the oral presentation, will result in a lower grade for the presentation, since the purpose of the oral presentation is to familiarize the student with giving safety presentations as they would in a business setting.
GRADING POLICY: 20% Term paper (and oral presentation where applicable)
75% quizzes (25% each)
5% Class attendance and class participation

POLICY STATEMENT: The use of tobacco in any form is prohibited in the classroom. Students shall not wear any hats in the classroom, unless they have a medical or religious need. Absences from quizzes may be honored, subject to approval by the instructor, if accompanied by a physician’s excuse. If business requirements or an immediate family emergency prevents you from taking a quiz, you may be allowed to take a make up quiz, subject to the approval of the instructor. It follows that the make up quiz will be different from that given during the scheduled quiz time. No other reasons for missing quizzes will be considered.
All student activities and work products including, but not limited to term papers and quizzes are subject to the rules covering academic dishonesty as defined and described in both the undergraduate and graduate University catalogs.
