SAFETY IN TRANSPORTATION

Course Description:

 

            This course is designed to develop an understanding and appreciation of the complexity of the transportation system in the United States.  There are five major transportation areas to be analyzed along with various rules and regulations; employment possibilities and training, problems and solutions.  The five areas we will cover include:  Highway, Water, Pipeline, Aviation and Railroad.

 

Credit:            3 hours                        Prerequisites:             None

 

 

Desired Learner Outcomes:

 

1.      Identify the major areas of transportation and explain the role of each.

2.      List procedures for selecting, training and supervising personnel in the

operation of each of the major transportation systems.

3.      Identify and explain key provisions of federal, state and local laws and codes

that regulate the major transportation systems.

4.      List and explain the need for key safety provisions in each of the major areas.

5.      Explain the economic impact and role of each of the major transportation systems.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Evaluation:

 

            Students will not have any quizzes or major examinations.  Students will be graded on a class presentation and a major research paper chosen from a list of topics supplied by the professor.  Additionally, student will have to do library/journal research articles for presentation.

 

1.      Students will read ten journal articles concerned with the various areas of transportation dealing with major problems in each area.  Each article is limited to a one page summary evaluation of said article. 

2.      Each student will serve on a committee dealing with Aviation; Railroad; Water and Pipeline.  Students are to locate information dealing with these areas and report to the class on what they have found correlates with course objectives.

3.      Students will do a major research paper on one of the selected topics below.  Paper will be an analytical analysis of the problem as it relates to a specific transportation topic.

  3. Intelligent Transportation Systems:  How Will They Affect Safety and Business
  4. Transportation in the 21st Century
  5. Safety Issues in Student Transportation
  6. Job Safety Analysis and Personal Protective Equipment Compliance in Transit Operations
  7. Emergency Preparedness:  Are You Ready?
  8. Rail Operating Safety
  9. Other areas

 

 

Grading Policy:

 

            I use a standard 90%, 80%, 70% grading system.  The paper will be worth 100 points and you will be graded on the following:

 

1.      Proper referencing of material in paper

2.      Listing the references properly in ref section

3.      Spelling & grammar

4.      Table of contents

5.      Overall Quality (includes, but not limited to, professional appearance, initiative, conciseness).  Paper should be 15 pages with a minimum of 10 references.

 

The class presentation will be worth 50 points per student.  You will be graded as to the overall quality of your research, presentation of information, did you read the entire paper, was the presentation interesting?

 

Readings will be worth 100 points or 10 points per article.  Articles will be graded on spelling, grammar, appropriateness to subject area.
