Parent’s Guide to Career Planning

Encourage your student to:
Freshman Year
- Make grades a top priority
- Meet with each of his/her professors and advisor regularly
- Talk with your student about the different campus activities that might match his interests
- Register with Marshall JobTrax if interested in finding a part-time job or on-campus employment
- Plan early to find a summer job that may match her career interests
Sophomore Year
- Visit Career Services Center if they are confused about what to major in
- Talk with your student about the different career and major choices she is considering
- Follow his/her passion and dreams and make the choices that fit for him
- Come up with a list of your friends or relatives that may work in a field of interest to her
- Obtain a career-related internship experience over the summer
Junior Year
- Take advantage of leadership and volunteer opportunities at Marshall
- Develop a resume and have it critiqued by a Career Advisor
- Attend the Fall and Spring Career Expos
- Discuss employment and graduate school options with your student
- Obtain a career-related experience or internship that matches his/her career goals
Senior Year
- Update their resume and participate in on-campus interviews
- Attend the Fall and Spring Career Expos
- Seek assistance with her job search from Career Services
- Develop graduate or professional school plans
