Parent’s Guide to Career Planning

freshman

Encourage your student to:

Freshman Year

  • Make grades a top priority
  • Meet with each of his/her professors and advisor regularly
  • Talk with your student about the different campus activities that might match his interests
  • Register with Marshall JobTrax if interested in finding a part-time job or on-campus employment
  • Plan early to find a summer job that may match her career interests

Sophomore Year

  • Visit Career Services Center if they are confused about what to major in
  • Talk with your student about the different career and major choices she is considering
  • Follow his/her passion and dreams and make the choices that fit for him
  • Come up with a list of your friends or relatives that may work in a field of interest to her
  • Obtain a career-related internship experience over the summer

Junior Year

  • Take  advantage of leadership and volunteer opportunities at Marshall
  • Develop a resume and have it critiqued by a Career Advisor
  • Attend the Fall and Spring Career Expos
  • Discuss employment and graduate school options with your student
  • Obtain a career-related experience or internship that matches his/her career goals

Senior Year

  • Update their resume and participate in on-campus interviews
  • Attend the Fall and Spring Career Expos
  • Seek assistance with her job search from Career Services
  • Develop graduate or professional school plans
