Admission Requirements for Degree-Seeking Students

NOTE: All materials submitted in support of an application for admission become the property of Marshall University. Materials will not be returned or released to the applicant/student or to third parties. Any student admitted on the basis of false and/or incomplete information is subject to immediate dismissal or other disciplinary action.

  • The receipt of a bachelor’s degree from an accepted, regionally accredited college or university is the basic requirement for admission as a graduate student to Marshall University and cannot be waived. Applicants must fulfill all admission requirements as specified in the Graduate Catalog.

  • Students enrolled in the last semester of an undergraduate program may be admitted conditionally subject to completion of the bachelor’s degree program and subject to departmental approval. All required credentials, including official transcripts are necessary for consideration, including an official letter of good standing/proof of pending graduation.

  • There is a minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale from the bachelor’s degree granting institution. Some programs may have a higher minimum GPA requirement and/or require additional credentials.

  • Please note that every graduate program at Marshall University has its own set of requirements in addition to the general Graduate College requirements.  Please review the Program information page on this website for program specific requirements or see the department section of the Graduate Catalog for more information.

  • Request that the registrars at all colleges and universities (except Marshall University) you have attended or are attending to send official transcripts of your academic records directly to the Graduate Admissions Office. The transcript from the institution that awarded your bachelor’s degree must contain the name of the degree earned and the date the degree was conferred. Transcripts of all previous graduate work must be submitted. The Graduate Admissions Office cannot accept unofficial transcripts, including transcripts that are faxed, hand-delivered or, stamped “issued to the student.”

NOTE: Graduate Admissions cannot accept transcripts hand-delivered by the student or a third-party, regardless of whether the transcript is in a sealed envelope. The official transcript must be issued to and mailed directly to Marshall University Graduate Admissions by the registrar of the issuing institution.

  • Take the appropriate admission examination and have the scores sent directly to the Graduate Admissions Office by the testing agency. The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test is required of applicants to some programs. MBA applicants in the U.S. must take the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) prior to being considered for admission to that program. Other programs accept the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores. Minimum scores on the admission examinations may be established by the academic departments. Please review the Program information page on this website for program specific test requirements or see the department section of the Graduate Catalog for more information.

  • Provide to the Graduate Admissions Office all other Admission materials such as letters of recommendation that may be required by the program to which you are applying.
