MEMORANDUM
TO: Deans/Directors
FROM: Sarah N. Denman, Provost and Senior Vice
President for Academic Affairs
SUBJECT: ACADEMIC FUND RAISING PROCESS
Planning is an essential aspect of institutional growth and development and nowhere is this more self evident than in the allocation of funds to support mutually agreed upon objectives. In cooperation with the Office of Development, the Academic Affairs Office has established a policy and procedures for external funding raising activities.
This memorandum outlines the process previously established for all faculty seeking private monies, regardless of the size or the nature of the request.
This process is as follows:
1. All proposals that request funding from private citizens, corporations or foundations must be accompanied by the External Funding Review Form with signatures of approval from all levels, even if no funding is provided at that level. If the request is not approved at any level, a memo of explanation from that level will be sent to the Project director and copied to all previous levels of approval, and the application process is terminated.
2. The Office of Academic Affairs must approve unsolicited offers of support from private donors, foundations or corporations.
This process is not intended to be used when faculty members are submitting applications for fellowships from established programs sponsored by public or private agencies.
Upon receipt of each request, the Academic Affairs Office will review it in relation to the mission and priorities within the Academic Affairs division. If approved at this level, the request will be forwarded to the Development office.
Funding request forms are attached, which require the potential recipient to obtain approval signatures from the appropriate chairperson/division head, dean, and the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Executive Director, The MU Foundation Inc. & Senior Vice President for Development.
