New Faculty Orientation

The 2007 Marshall University New Faculty Seminar

The Office of the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning at Marshall University present a series of workshops during the fall semester designed to enhance the teaching of faculty who are new to the University. Regular group meetings with new faculty from across the campus to discuss issues and concerns, and to celebrate successes, have been shown to positively affect faculty adjustment, faculty productivity, and faculty commitment to their institution. Therefore, we hope that you will choose to participate in this series, and we look forward to working with you throughout your career at Marshall.

This year we are focusing on issues of course design as outlined by Dr. L. Dee Fink. The seminars will use Fink’s book Creating Significant Learning Experiences as the format for activities and discussions. Each week of the series will be based on reading part of the book and coming to the group with prepared material. You can work on a class that you are teaching in the fall, or prepare a class that you will be teaching in the spring. By the end of the series you should have a completed course syllabus, course goals and student learning outcomes, teaching and learning activities, and methods of assessing student learning. The book will be provided to all participants.
