John Marshall Celebration

September 24, 25 and 26
Richmond and Lexington, Va., and Lewisburg, W.Va.

Faculty and students from the Department of Music and the newly created John Marshall Fife and Drum Corps will perform a John Marshall Celebration at various sites in Richmond and Lexington, Va., and Lewisburg, W.Va., September 24, 25 and 26. The program will feature military music for fife and drum, songs and dances from the era of Chief Justice John Marshall.

The formation of the John Marshall Fife and Drum Corps has been an initiative of the John Deaver Drinko Academy, whose mission it is to promote the political, historical and cultural heritage from the early decades of our nation’s history. Led by Dr. Wendell Dobbs, the 15-member ensemble of elite university music students performs in revolutionary war era uniform and represents the university at athletic, cultural and civic events. The corps performs on Cooperman McDonagh fifes and authentic rope drums. Their music is drawn from the traditional music of the era.

Much music in the young United States was European in origin. Acknowledging that heritage, the program will present selections from O’Keefe and Shield’s Poor Soldier, an operetta performed in all the major East Coast cities and as far west as Cincinnati by 1801. American musical sentiment found its own expression in songs written by Americans and published by the fledgling publishing houses in New York, Boston and Philadelphia. Accompanied by Dr. Leslie Petteys, the program will include songs by Sanderson, Hewitt, King and others that would have been heard in American parlors and music halls.

Dancing was also an essential part of the late 18th and early 19th century social life. The program will demonstrate quadrilles in historic attire from the Williamsburg and Richmond traditions.

Come celebrate the era of John Marshall with the music and pageantry of the John Marshall Fife and Drum Corps and the Marshall University Department of Music.
