Alumni Legacy Tuition Program --
Frequently Asked Questions
I took classes
at my local college while I was in high school. Am I still eligible?
Yes. Generally,
“first time in college” status does not begin until the fall
semester after graduating from high school. Additionally, taking
classes at a college during the summer between high school
graduation and the first fall semester normally does not affect
“first time in college” status.
How long will
I receive the reduction?
Provided the
renewal requirements are met, the reductions are available for up to
eight (8) sequential semesters or until graduation with a
baccalaureate degree.
Can a transfer
student receive the tuition reduction?
No. At this time,
the reduction is available only to new, first-time freshmen.
Why aren’t
in-state students eligible for the tuition reduction?
The program
reduces the generally applicable non-resident tuition and fees. West
Virginia resident students are already paying at or below the
reductions offered. Additionally, many West Virginia resident
students who meet the academic qualifications would already receive
the PROMISE scholarship.
Are metro
students eligible?
Students who
would normally be required to pay metro rates are already receiving
a tuition rate significantly below the non-resident rate. A student
can receive the Legacy Tuition Reduction in those few instances
where the rate after reduction of normal non-resident tuition and
fees is more beneficial to the student than the metro rate and/or
other scholarships available to the student.
Can the
student get the Legacy Tuition Reduction AND the Board of Governors
Scholarship for out-of-state students?
Tier 1 of the
Legacy Tuition Reduction assists those students who may also qualify
for the Board of Governors scholarship. The Legacy Tuition Reduction
cannot be combined with any other general academic scholarships
offered through Marshall’s Office of Student Financial Assistance.
The student is still eligible for any non-institutional aid (i.e.,
Pell Grants, student loans, scholarships awarded through third
parties, etc.)
