The Marshall
Experience
by Sarah George, Class of 2007
There
are so many great memories of Marshall it is impossible to
choose just one. Reflecting on my time at the university and
living in Huntington, I realize it was the whole experience that
creates the memory that stays with me.
I was a student during the time of
great football, with members of the Herd including Chad
Pennington and Byron Leftwich. Football games were an all day
event. I will never forget the first time I saw the town “Bleed
Green!” I was a freshman living in Twin Towers and as my friends
and I prepared to tailgate for our first game we quickly
realized that the whole town was here to join us. Looking at the
sea of green and white I became an instant fan and felt proud to
be a Marshall student.
Over the years, fall brought on
more than just football. It was filled with the back to
school vibe that floated throughout the town. Friends
returned from their summer vacations refreshed and ready to
start another semester. I can still remember the feeling of
standing in Old Main where I spent several hours adding and
dropping classes as I tirelessly tried to choose an area of
study that would suit me. I finally ended up in the W. Page Pitt
School of Journalism.
After one photography class with
Professor
Rebecca Johnson and an advertising course taught by
Professor Janet Dooley, I was hooked! The next few years would
lead to many long hours and late nights researching and studying
in Drinko Library, which, thankfully, offered Starbucks coffee!
As well as a job with the Parthenon as an advertising
sales rep — my first true taste of the advertising world! While
I wasn’t by any means the best on the staff, my experiences with
helping to promote local businesses in Huntington and the skills
I learned from Advertising Manager Sandy Savage will never be
forgotten.
It seems each fall also meant a
new apartment, allowing us to experience living all over
Huntington — my favorite and most memorable, living near Ritter
Park. It seems to be the stomping grounds for all Marshall
students, playing football or walking their dogs — the park was
always alive with action! The area was filled with historic
houses now transformed into apartments and the streets were
paved with bricks, providing the feeling of a great tradition we
were now a part of.
As a student I don’t think I
realized the magnitude of the information and life experiences
shared by the instructors at Marshall. As a professional I’m
thankful to have been influenced by some of the greatest in the
field! The connections and experiences I gained while attending
Marshall have carried me into a strong career and many
friendships that will last a lifetime.
