This year’s incoming medical school class could be considered a class of firsts: the first class in which women outnumber men, the first to have a married couple entering together; the first to have West Virginia’s top amateur female golfer; and quite possibly the first to have a country musician with a recording contract. Students hail from the east coast to the west, and quite a few already have overseas experience through mission and aid trips.

The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine publicly welcomed incoming students on August 9 in the White Coat Ceremony at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center. During this ceremony, students receive their first white coats, which are donated by the school’s alumni, faculty and staff. The guest speaker was alumnus David Hubbard, M.D., professor and chief of the section of orthopedic trauma surgery at West Virginia University.

The students were also presented with stethoscopes provided by Drs. Joseph and Omayma Touma, as well as books provided by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, which promotes  compassionate medical care and caregivers.

Dr. Charles H. McKown Jr., vice president and dean of the school, told the students they were part of an elite group.

"You represent an extremely select group of people, selected under intense scrutiny," McKown said.

He assured them that they were in the right place and following the correct path in pursuing medicine and that Marshall was a wise choice for their education.

"You have remarkable training here. We have a very dedicated and conscientious faculty," McKown said.
