Hello alumni
and friends of Marshall,
Summer is almost over but it’s
been a really busy one for me and your alumni board.
There have been committee meetings
and we've been planning Homecoming, the MU/WVU game tailgate,
and events with our clubs in Washington, Cincinnati and
Charleston, to name a few.
It is very hard for me to believe
I’ve been doing this job for over a year. The year has really
flown by for me and I want to update you on what has been
accomplished.
One of my goals was for the Alumni
Association to get on the radar of our students, especially the
juniors and seniors, so they will want to be involved and stay
involved with us after graduation. In the past we saw most of
our students not reconnecting with their university for years
after graduation. All over the country, universities are
struggling with this issue. Our Young Alumni/ Student
Recruitment committee was formed and ran with the idea of being
as visible as possible to students. A brochure was designed to
give to all students highlighting why to join the alumni
association. We sponsored buses for the students to the MU/WVU
basketball game in Charleston, we were visible at job fairs and
we did an ice cream social for them during dead week of spring
semester. We didn’t forget the graduate school in Charleston and
were visible there to answer questions. I personally was
thrilled to be at the last job fair and have at least 30 seniors
ask me how to get on the Alumni Association board. I think some
strides were made this year and I thank all the members of that
committee for working so hard.
We started the ball rolling on our
new Erickson Alumni Center, so be watching for construction on
our side of Fifth Avenue some day soon.
Our homecoming committee has a
great weekend planned for everyone and then there’s the added
excitement of the Marshall movie. It’s been a busy year.
Last weekend was the first board
meeting of our new year with 10 new members joining us and lots
of planning sessions on Saturday. The board was introduced that
Saturday night at the Symphony’s last POPS concert of the
summer. Our board helped the orchestra pay for fireworks and it
just was a wonderful ending to a wonderful night of Roger’s and
Hammerstein’s music.
We, the board and myself, want to
continue to make the alumni association bigger and better. Your
support and ideas are wonderful and we encourage you to keep
them coming. We’ll see you at the events this year.
Sincerely,

Sharon Porter
