Dear
alumni and friends of Marshall,
This is
it, my final column to you as president of the MUAA. It's been a
really hectic but great two years as president. I can hardly
believe the time has flown by so fast and here I am at my last
job!!!
As you
read this, I will be in Brazil, floating down the Amazon River
on a paddle boat, doing mission work in a different village each
day for a week. Our daughter arranged this trip through her job
in Chattanooga, Tenn., as a youth minister and I’m tagging along
with her team. I’ll get to do medical work along with several
doctors on the team and I’m really excited about this
opportunity. My family I have a passion for these mission trips
that started back in 1996 when my husband and daughter went to
Nicaragua came back and got
our son,
Jay, and me involved. We have now
been to Russia, Africa, Cuba and Alaska on these trips, but I’ve
never been to South America, so I’m really excited about this
opportunity. I will take many Marshall souvenirs and hand them
out. Marshall stuff is everywhere we’ve been!
I’ve
been busy getting ready to go but also have been looking back on
my presidency and evaluating what we accomplished. One thing I’m
very proud of is our increased visibility to students. They are
now very aware of the Alumni Association, and many talk about
serving on the board or in club offices after graduation. We, my
board, and I worked very hard reaching out to the students,
especially to the juniors and seniors and it’s really paying off
for the MUAA.
Our
clubs are working hard and we have contacts to start several new
ones this coming year. And last but not least, I love how many
young alumni are now serving on the board and reaching out to
other young alumni and students to recruit them for Marshall.
I will
still be around as immediate past president for two more years
so I’ll still be seeing you at events and hope to hear from you
if need my help. I am happy to turn the reigns over to my
sorority sister and friend Nancy Campbell, and will help her
with her vision for the MUAA.
Sincerely,

Sharon Porter
MUAA National President
