A message from Sharon Porter,
president of the MU Alumni Association
Hello
alumni and friends,
It's been a busy, wonderful
spring around our Marshall University.
We just had a fabulous Alumni
Weekend. The 50th, 60th and 10th year reunion classes were honored
at a luncheon. We were entertained by “Devil Anse Hatfield” and
reminisced about former days. I renewed acquaintances with my
third-grade teacher and former high school choir director. What fun!
Then our weekend ended with our
69th annual Alumni Awards banquet in the Don Morris Room. But, oh
my, Nancy Pelphrey outdid herself and the Don Morris Room was
transformed. Our wonderful evening honored students, faculty and
distinguished alumni. The highlight of the evening was Mark McVey
singing three numbers for us and I think I can safely say he brought
the house down.
Then,
graduation, and with it we added some 2,800 new alumni to our ranks.
Sen. Robert C. Byrd (shaking hands with Marshall President Stephen
J. Kopp at right) was our speaker and honoree.
He was amazing,
as usual, as he spoke to our grads.
Sen. Byrd and businessman Tim
Haymaker each received an
honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree (see photo below).
Dr.
Kopp tried something we haven’t done at graduation for a long time.
He had each graduate come up in order of their colleges and he shook
their hands. That went very well and the individual college
graduations were well attended. We, the Alumni Association, were
represented by board members at all of these. It is our hope that we
have brought a “face” to the alumni association so our new grads
will join us and stay in touch and never forget Marshall!
Summers almost here. We will all
get busy with things but keep your eyes open for Marshall
happenings.
Sincerely,

MUAA National President
