Hello alumni
and friends,
We Are
Marshall is launched! I wish everyone could have been here
for “Hollywood comes to Huntington.” It was really something.
The movie was
well worth the wait. The law firm of Hunt and Sereno, along with
the Kanawha County Alumni Club, generously sponsored a showing
of the movie at the Teays Valley Marquee Cinema on December 6.
It was an awesome experience to see the film with so many other
Marshall supporters.
The premiere
week started with a reunion of the ’71 Young Thundering Herd.
They met Sunday morning at Spring Hill Cemetery for a memorial
service, and then across the street for a meet and greet at
Norway Avenue Church of Christ. It was really a joy for me to
meet these men and coaches. To see their joy at being reunited
and their pleasure at being honored for what they did was
exceptional. Thanks to Alan Meadows, Class of ’71, and his wife
who organized that wonderful morning and their church family for
being so hospitable to us all. The ’71 team had all kinds of
great events, culminating in the premiere and after-party.
December 12
was a wonderfully warm day in Huntington for all the stars and
party goers to walk the “green” carpet. Gov. Joe Manchin and his
wife, Gayle, came along with the stars to make it a special
evening for everyone at the premiere. The transformation of the
Don Morris room in the student center into a candlelit
wonderland of green and white was incredible. Gourmet food from
the head chef from the Sea Pines resort in Georgia was served
and enjoyed by all.
The Keith-Albee
Theatre was decked out in beautiful flower arrangements. The
stars and director spoke to us before the movie and
presentations of Blenko glass pieces were made to them so that a
lasting touch of our area returns to Hollywood with them.
Then, there
is the movie. By the time you read this, you probably have seen
or are planning to see this outstanding work that captures the
Marshall spirit. I hope it hits that special place in your
Marshall heart. I don’t know if I can really describe the
emotion of the theatre that night, the applause and tears that
could be heard from the crowd. The movie captures the story so
well and portrays how our town struggled to survive the loss of
the football team, doctors, lawyers, politicians, and the
families of the players who struggled with their losses all over
the country. The whole movie pleasantly surprised me as being so
upbeat, if you will, and telling viewers to learn the life
lesson of getting in the game and playing. Don’t give up.
I hope
everyone who sees it is as pleased as I was with the quality of
the work and effort that tells our story so well. Get everyone
you know to see our movie!
Have a great
holiday season and thank you to all you do for the alumni
Association and Marshall University!
Sincerely,

Sharon Porter
