Commander’s Corner
Note:
This letter is
included in the Marshall Army ROTC
Military Science Department
Thundering Herd Battalion Newsletter, available
as a PDF file
here.
To our friends and alumni:
Greetings
and Happy Holidays to all of you, alumni, friends
and family of the Marshall University ROTC program.
Thank you for all you do, continuing to serve our
communities and especially to our alumni who have
and who continue to defend freedom. In
our ongoing efforts to build and improve alumni
outreach, we are FINALLY publishing our first
Battalion Newsletter. My
hope is to continue this tradition by publishing a
newsletter at least twice a year.
Our cadets continue to perform in an excellent
manner in all they do, and I am proud and humbled to
lead them. This
year at the Leader Development and Assessment Course
(many of you remember it as Advanced Camp), we
exceeded the cadet command averages in every area of
training, leadership, fitness and tactics. This
outstanding performance was indicative of both the
quality of cadet we recruit and the rigorous,
focused training program developed and executed by
Senior Military Instructor, Sergeant Major Rick
Cottrell, and the entire cadre. As
our cadets commission to serve in the Active Army,
Army Reserves and National Guard, they defend
freedom in a dangerous and uncertain world. If
the Marshall Lieutenants are any indication of the
Junior Officer corps as a whole, rest assured that
the future of our military is in good hands.
Tax News
There is an ROTC directed
designation for tax
deductible donations to the
Marshall University
Foundation Fund. When
donating to the university
fund, simply designate
“ROTC-Thundering Herd
Battalion Fund.” Your
continuing support allows us
to provide, in addition to
training, numerous morale
support activities that are
not always supported by
government funds. You

Great things are happening with the program. We
have spent thousands of dollars in government funds,
university funds and alumni support to improve our
facilities and training. My
thanks to all of you who have helped make it
possible.
This past month, I had the
pleasure of having lunch with MG(R) James
Baylor, one of our distinguished alumni. Not
only has MG Baylor been a generous
benefactor to our program, he is committed
to assisting in building alumni relations
and support. Jim,
thank you again, for your continuing help.
We always appreciate your
feedback, suggestions and
support. Please
feel free to call me at (304)
696-2650 or email at
samek@marshall.edu. If
your travels bring you to Marshall, please
stop in. We
would be happy to show you around at any
time.
Thank you again for all you
do to represent us with pride and keep our
future strong. GO
HERD!
Respectfully,
Joseph Samek

U.S. Army Commanding
