Spotlight on the Houston, Texas Alumni Club

Dear Houston area Marshall University alumni and friends,

Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are affected by Hurricane Ike. We hope you will be able to get back to your homes and your lives soon.

Because of hurricane damage to the game watching location, Cathy Ambridge is trying very hard to find a new location for everyone to meet for the rest of the football season. Be on the look for an e-mail blast informing you of the new location. It will be posted on this web site as well.

If you have any suggestions for a meeting place, you might want to contact Cathy as soon as possible!

In 2006, Bob Brammer and Cathy Ambridge got together with a plan to organize an alumni club for the Houston, Texas, area. After putting together a board, they started making plans for the first event, a football game watching at a local sport bar. “Somehow in all that I became president,” said Ambridge, “but all the board members were committed to making our local alumni group grow! Without the support of the board members we would not be where we are today.”

Support from alumni in the area is also vital. “Finding the alumni that are 100 percent behind MU alumni is the key to our club” added Ambridge.

The most successful event so far was the tailgate at the Marshall vs. University of Houston game in November 2007. “The turnout was great and everyone had a great time, even if the score was not what we had hoped for,” Ambridge said.

“Marshall is a part of all of us and getting together makes that small part of us come alive. For so many of us, Huntington was also our hometown, so making the connections has been the best part for all of us,” she added.

Another event was the Marshall vs. Rice Baseball game in March 2007. See a related story about the 2007 tailgate at the University of Houston here.

The club is planning some great events this fall and they even have some activities lined up for next year.
