The
Lincoln County Friends of Marshall Club Spring Banquet
on April 22 featured men’s basketball coach Donnie
Jones. Left to right are Justin Blankenship, club
president; Deidra Roberts, secretary; Donnie Jones;
David Kushner, treasurer; and Kevin Miller,
vice-president. Proceeds from the banquet enabled the
club to award four $1,000 scholarships to qualifying
Lincoln County students who will be attending Marshall
in the fall. |
In October 2007, a group of Marshall
alumni and friends in Lincoln County gathered together with the
mission of promoting Marshall through student recruitment working
with
the Marshall Foundation, athletic support through the Big
Green Scholarship Foundation, and providing an enjoyable
opportunity for all Marshall supporters to come together
for social and intellectual enrichment.
"Our first step, of course, is to
increase membership," Club President Justin Blankenship said. "There
are a lot of Marshall supporters in the area. We want to be able to
support the university both financially and in its awareness, and
help out the kids who go to school in Lincoln County."
Justin, Class of 2000, is a network
administrator for BB&T. He is also
president of JB
Technology Services, a technology services company.
The Lincoln County Friends of Marshall Club is off to a
great start. "We awarded four $1,000 scholarships to Lincoln County
residents who graduated high school in 2008 and will be attending
Marshall University this fall," Justin said. "Three of the four
had 4.0 GPAs."
The goal for 2009 is to fund a $15,000 endowed scholarship in
full for a Lincoln County student who attends Marshall University.
"We are a dual club," Justin added. "In
addition to the academic goals, we plan to raise $15,000 to be split
between the Big Green Scholarship Foundation and Marshall University
Alumni Association.
"All of the club members have done a
wonderful job so far," Justin said. "They have really worked hard
to help get the club off to a great start."
Football game bus trip
The
club is planning a bus trip to the East Carolina game
on November 8, according to Justin. "We will have 48 tickets
available with Spring Valley Charter. The cost is $140, which
includes the bus ticket, the game ticket, and a $20 donation to the
club for future events.
You pay separately for your meals and
hotel."
The club has arranged for a block of
rooms with the Best Western Motel in Wilson, N.C. The cost of each
room is $60 a night, which includes tax and amenities. "One
of our club members, Greg Ellis, has a son-in-law who is the manager
of a Best Western hotel in Southern West Virginia (Randy Kveton).
Randy was able to work with the Best Western in Wilson, N.C., to get
our club the best rate possible for our bus trip to East
Carolina. Randy also has a great deal of experience planning
fundraisers, so we look forward to his support."
