Stepping, a dance tradition
made popular by African-American fraternities and sororities, is
a complex performance involving synchronized percussive
movement, singing, speaking, chanting, drama and it is performed
with drill team precision. The roots of stepping
can be traced back to the “African Boot Dance” that was brought
to the Americas in slavery time. The dance is significant in
that it served as a chance to re-sound the battle cries of
ancient drums, which is now compensated through percussive foot
stomping and hand clapping. The fight and the passion of the
songs were mimicked by rhythmic dance movements. Stepping in the
United States can be traced as far back as the early 1920s on
historically black colleges and universities, better known as
HBCU’s. Through the years, step shows have become the format of
choice to display pride in one’s organization.
