Dr. Joseph
Wyatt, a member of Marshall's Department of Psychology, was
invited last November to lecture at the Warsaw School of Social
Psychology and at the University of Warsaw, in conjunction with
the opening of a new autism center in Warsaw.
"While
attending a conference of the Association for Behavior
Analysis in Chicago, I made the acquaintance of several people
from Poland," said Wyatt. "One was Dr. Monika Suchowierska, an
expert in autism in Poland. Monika came to the United States when she was in her early twenties with the goal of
becoming a translator for the United Nations. However, in her
role as au pair for a family with an autistic child, she became
interested in the highly successful treatment the child was
receiving, i.e., discrete trial training. She was so impressed,
in fact, that she made a career change and received her
doctorate in human development at the University of Kansas.
Since then she has revolutionized the treatment of autism in
Poland."
Wyatt was
invited to attend the opening of Suchowierska's autism center,
which is already bursting at the seams with clients. "I was able
to meet the staff, the parents and the children," said Wyatt. "I
have confidence that Monika's methods will spread throughout
Poland and that part of the world. It is definitely being done
correctly."
When Wyatt
lectured at the universities, Suchowierska was his translator.
Wyatt was impressed that the students knew English so well, she
was not needed after the first lecture. "I could tell from the
questions they asked that they understood what I had to say. It
was very helpful that Dr. Suchowierska had already translated my
power point slides for the students, as well. The lectures were on "Behaviorism: Myth and Reality," "Behavioral Forensic Psychology," and "Fraudulent Therapies."
The
visit was arranged, in part, by Professor Wojciech Pisula,
Ph.D., dean of the Department of Psychology. “Dean Pisula
was one of a number of individuals who made me feel most
welcomed,” Wyatt said.
Wyatt, a
graduate of West Virginia University, specializes in
behaviorism, clinical psychology and forensic psychology.
