President's Note

Living away from Huntington and Marshall's campus, I have always tried to make the effort to stay connected and informed about the university. I read my Marshall Magazine cover to cover. The alumni newsletter has provided me, and I know many of you, a monthly connection. We now have Facebook and LinkedIn to create even stronger connections. I have renewed friendships and made even more friends with these communication tools and I hope you use them as well. I love talking about Marshall, and I love talking with those of you who share my passion about our Alma Mater. What can be better?

During this time of year, we are surrounded by young men and women who are trying to make a decision about college as they graduate from high school. Share the Marshall passion with them. Marshall offers great surroundings and a great education. I travel to different colleges and universities and it is very rare to see the enthusiasm that is always present when a group of Marshall alumni and/or students are present. I don't have to be in Huntington to see the incredible excitement. I am so very proud to be part of it all. I know you are, too. What could be better?

New Ways to Give Back to Marshall

The MU Text to give program was launched at this year’s homecoming game allowing the Marshall faithful to use their mobile phone to text a contribution to benefit the university. By texting the keyword LEARN to 40579, alumni, friends and fans of Marshall can contribute $5 to MU scholarships. The contribution appears on the donor’s phone bill along with standard text messaging rates. For more information click here. A competitive student giving program through text gifts is also underway.

The Foundation is also asking the Marshall Community to get involved at GivetoMarshall.com. This new site is home to a viral giving campaign where MU supporters can create a personal profile and fundraising objective and ask fellow alumni, family and friends to help them achieve their goal for Marshall. This is an easy and free way for alumni to make a positive impact on the present and future of Marshall. As a bonus, those that achieve various levels of contributions will be rewarded with cool Marshall rewards.

MUAA Fall Board Meeting and Alumni Club Weekend

November 13-14, 2009

The Marshall University Alumni Association is hosting its fall Board Meeting and Alumni Club President's Weekend beginning Friday, November 13, 2009, and concluding on Saturday, November 14. The Marshall University Alumni Association has approximately forty alumni clubs that support the university all across the United States. While those who live near Huntington may find it easy to continue being part of Marshall on a regular basis, many others are not so fortunate. Alumni Association Clubs can help restore and maintain that “We Are… Marshall” connection that is so special to those who know and love our University. The Alumni Association wants to honor these presidents for their efforts to bring Marshall University to their cities.

Are you an alumnus who does not live in an area with an alumni club? Then you might be interested in starting your own! For more information contact Nancy Pelphrey in the Alumni Office at 1-800-MUALUMX. Click here to view existing clubs.

Fountain Ceremony

There will be a gathering at the Memorial Fountain, outside of the Marshall University Student Center, for a ceremony to remember and honor our football team, coaches, and fans involved in the tragic plane crash on November 14, 1970. The ceremony will begin at 12:00 p.m. on November 14, 2009. Click here to learn more about the fountain and its history.

Erickson Alumni Center and Marshall University Foundation Hall

The Erickson Alumni Center and Marshall University Foundation Hall began construction in May 2008 with a projected cost of $9 million. Charles O. Erickson, a Parkersburg businessman who initially supported a permanent home for the alumni offices has several alumni centers named for him on college campuses across West Virginia; including Bethany College, West Virginia University, Concord University, Alderson-Broaddus College, and Marshall University. “I think alumni centers are a big help to a university” he said. “When alumni are organized, they can do a lot for the university.” Upon his passing, Erickson’s son, Charles F. Erickson has taken over his legacy and continues his commitment to alumni today. Click here to read the full article.
