On October
11, 2001, the Ohio University and Marshall University Resource Collaborative
Teacher Partners met at the RESA II facility in Huntington, West Virginia.
This joint Teacher Partner meeting focused on a new professional development
initiative developed by Dr. Joe Straley and Sally Shafer, of the University of
Kentucky's Department of Physics and Astronomy, HOV Physics Project:
Hands-On/Virtual Workshops. Sally Shafer and Cathy Hesseldenz conducted the
workshop. The participants were engaged in a brief overview by working with
activities utilizing mirrors. Additionally, Sally and Cathy presented via a
CD-Rom that was developed for this project. The goal of the session was to
ascertain if the Teacher Partners were interested in becoming facilitators for
pilot groups of grade 4-8 teachers in their districts. The project directors
hope to have 30 pilot sights from across ARSI districts by this spring.
The unique professional development model is designed
to deliver 30 hours of instruction by utilization of a CD-Rom, online
interactions, and a support "kit" of materials to a group of rural teachers.
The teachers, with the limited assistance of an ARSI facilitator, will explore
a variety of hands-on activities at their local school and at the time they
select. The goal is to increase the physics content knowledge of the teachers
through a "in-place" professional development model.

utilization of mirrors to teach basic physics and math concepts. |

Loretta Davis and Sue Nichols from OU ponder, "I wonder what would
happen to the corresponding angles if we stood here?" |

If we could just get the CD-Rom to work, we might
understand the lesson! |
