With the title - Into the Millennium: Improving Student Achievement in Mathematics and Science - the stage was set for the third annual ARSI Summer Academy.

The Academy brought together over 200 participants from five key groups: Teacher Partners, Catalyst School Principals, District Liaisons, Superintendents and Community Engagement Team members.

The Academy goals included:
~ Identify best practices and strategies related to supporting quality mathematics and science
~ Develop and refine local district vision and direction for facilitating systemic change in mathematics and science
~ Identify and understand how district and school leaders can support and best utilize the ARSI Teacher Partner and other leaders to improve the mathematics and science learning environment
~ Develop strategies and a plan for implementing mathematics and science improvements in the Catalyst School(s) and District


 
Gatlinburg, Tennessee in the beautiful Smoky Mountains was the setting for the 1999 Summer Academy.

Teacher Partners worked on their professional portfolio during the year and brought them to the Academy to share. MU Teacher Partner, Danny Dailey and UT Teacher Partner, Jan Rich, look over the portfolios.
The leadership teams met each day to develop a school/district plan to address the needs of their science/mathematics programs. McDowell County Teacher Partner Linda Richards and Title I Coordinator, Mike Cortelessi, discuss the needs of their district.
