September 1999

September's Teacher Partner meeting focused on skills related to organizing and presenting professional development.

Ray Francis, professor at Central Michigan University, formerly with Appalachia Educational Laboratory provided training on Facilitating Systemic Change in Science and Mathematics Education: A Toolkit for Professional Developers. The toolkit was developed by the regional educational laboratories.

Teacher Partners were immersed in the strategies and techniques presented in the toolkit, which provide "learning activities that help those supporting reform efforts to deepen their knowledge about science and mathematics education, dissemination, professional development and the change process."

Teacher Partners left the meeting equipped with resources and strategies to help them as they partner with science and mathematics teachers in their districts.

Participants used various grouping arrangements/strategies to cover LOTS of material in the two days.
In April of 1999 ARSI offered the same Toolkit training to curriculum coordinators at the district and regional educational agencies. Those who could not attend the spring training were invited to attend with the Teacher Partners. KY Regional Service Center VII Science Specialist Eric Thomas and Mathematics Specialist Nancy Henson were ACTIVE participants in the training.
Participants design an ARSI brochure and discuss what key components should be considered in designing an effective brochure. Teacher Partner Diane Johnson and Eric Thomas, share their brochure idea. REALLY creative, guys!
Presenter Ray Francis introduces the Toolkit.
MU Curriculum Specialist Jill Hyde and Teacher Partner Danny Dailey look over the toolkit.
Teacher Partners Rick Willis and Carolyn Falin discuss the characteristics of effective professional development.
Sandy is SO excited. She said she never won anything. But she got a door prize today!
And what are they doing? Does the sign say "KICK ME". No! They are trying to figure out the information on their sign during a toolkit activity called Startling Statements.
Rick Willis, Sandy Brinegar, Jo Hendricks and John Putnam outline their professional development plan for a vicious district.
Glenn Righman, Linda Richards, Nancy Booth and Carolyn Falin discuss how to present their plan.
