February 1999,
Marshall University, Huntington WV

The February Teacher Partner Meeting was held on the Marshall University Campus. The focus was using projects/resources already in place that address high quality science and mathematics.

MU College of Education faculty joined Teacher Partners for a presentation by Donna Landin, West Virginia Department of Education, Reinventing Education project. The site (http://reinvent.k12.wv.us) provides on-line units related to the West Virginia Instructional Goals and Objectives as well as other teacher resources.

Thursday afternoon Sally Kovash, University of Kentucky Physics Department, worked with the elementary/middle school Teacher Partners on a variety of experiments exploring physical properties. High School teachers worked with Mike Kees (Kanawha Co. Schools) and Mike Baker (Calhoun Co. Schools) on integrated mathematics and science lessons using graphing calculators.

Dr. Jim Rye, West Virginia University, joined the group on Friday. Dr. Rye presented a discovery lesson, "Grape Expectations", he published in The Science Teacher, 1997. The exploration was continued in the afternoon using Inspiration software as a graphic organizer.

Dr. Jim Rye (WVU, HSTA) facilitated a high quality discovery lesson that combined mathematics and science.
Anne Jones and Linda Richards are adjusting their sugar solutions to achieve "lift off".
Joe Gilbert and Danny Dailey are running a second test to verify their results.
Teacher Partners used Inspiration software as a graphic organizer for their information on the Fruity Experiment.
