Marshall University art students will create a public art project in downtown Huntington that showcases their crocheting techniques while celebrating love this Valentine holiday.
The students are learning textile construction techniques in class with Associate Professor Miyuki Akai Cook, who assigned a “yarn bomb” project, similar to graffiti with yarn, using traditional methods such as knitting and crochet.
“The theme of the project is love, and the students are expressing and sharing love in this cold season,” Cook said. “Through this public project, the students find meaning and purpose of art in our society.”
The project is being done in cooperation with the Huntington Mayor’s Council on the Arts and will be on exhibition Thursday, Feb. 14, through Wednesday, Feb. 27, along 9th Street between 3rd and 4th avenues in downtown Huntington.
Participating students include Peyton Dewese, Karen Fry, Savannah Hunter, Kittanna Mitchell, Erica Putman, Shannon Rowe, Jessica Sturgell, Emily Thrain and Paix Wolfe.
