We're Counting on You...to
help build a better Marshall through assessment! This year, April 8 will be Marshall’s
official “Assessment Day.” However, Assessment Day activities will focus on five
major areas, most of which will occur between March 31 and April 11. These activities
- Senior Interviews – the Office of Career Services will be conducting
interviews with graduating seniors from March 31 – April 18. The purpose of these
interviews is to help us learn from you what you liked about Marshall and what we
can do to improve the learning experiences for future students. We also want to
know what your plans are when you graduate and if there is anything else we might
to do to help you achieve your goals. Watch your email for an interview invitation
from Denise Hogsett.
- Degree Program Surveys – each student
will receive a short survey asking for feedback regarding the quality of his/her
learning in the university’s general education courses and in his/her degree program’s
major courses. The survey also will include an open-ended box asking for suggestions
to improve the student experience at Marshall. Marshall and your degree program
will use this information to help improve your learning experience, so please take
five minutes to complete it! Watch for an email invitation from Mary Reynolds with
a subject line that says, “Assessment Day Degree Program Survey.”
Learning Assessment + (CLA+) – a percentage of graduating seniors from
each college will be randomly selected to participate in the CLA+. In conjunction
with the results of the senior assessment (described in #4), Marshall uses the results
of the CLA+ to assess how well it prepares students to critically evaluate information,
solve problems, and write effectively. Each student who completes this assessment
will receive feedback on his/her performance. Although these results will not become
part of the student’s official university record, many students find that using
CLA+ results can be helpful to them in job searches. So, if you are invited to represent
your college by taking the CLA+, we encourage you to do so. You will receive an
email invitation from Mary Reynolds with specific details if selected. The CLA+
schedule also is listed under the “Events for Students” tab.
Assessments – each college will administer senior assessments. The purpose
of these assessments is to help Marshall evaluate its students’ ability to critically
evaluate information, solve problems, and write effectively. We use the results
of these assessments to continually improve our curricular experiences. We ask that
all seniors participate in one of their college’s senior assessment sessions, unless
you are randomly selected to take the CLA+. To find the times and locations of your
college’s senior assessments, click on the “Events for Students” tab and click on
your college. The CLA+ schedule also is listed under the “Events for Students” tab.
Student Services Office and Other Assessment Day Surveys – each
year a number of offices on campus ask students to provide feedback regarding their
services by taking Assessment Day Surveys. You will find links to this year’s surveys
by clicking on the tab for “E-Survey for Students.” All students also will receive
an email from Mary Reynolds with a link to this page.
Students who complete each of these events will be placed in prize drawings for
an iPad-Mini (one will be won by a participant from each event, for a total of five)
and ten $25 gift cards to the Marshall University Bookstore. Again, there will be
ten per event, for a total of fifty. Click on the links provided above to view event
schedules, Assessment Day forms, prizes, results from previous assessment days and
