Marshall University offers two opportunities for financial assistance for members of the Marching Thunder. Each band member receives a band stipend at the conclusion of the marching season. In addition to the stipend, students may apply for a limited number of partial tuition scholarships. All new students interested in applying for a partial tuition waiver should audition on one of the designated audition dates. The audition dates include a January, February, March and April dates. These dates coincide with the audition dates set up by the Department of Music. If a new student is also a music major, the audition for the Department of Music will also apply toward a tuition scholarship for the marching band. Auxiliary members are also eligible for financial assistance. In addition, marching band may be used to satisfy the physical education requirement in the curriculum. Marching Thunder students also receive one hour academic credit by enrolling in the marching band.

Audition requirements for instrumentalists include sight reading and a short prepared piece of the student’s choosing. If none of the audition dates are convenient, other arrangements can be made. To set up an audition or get further information, please call the Band Office at (304) 696-2317.
