Overview
The Marshall University Identification Number, or MUID#, serves as
a unique identifier for each individual in the Marshall
community, replacing the use of Social Security Numbers to
identify MU constituents. The unique MUID# is assigned at
the beginning of an individual’s association with the
Institution. The MUID# is used across all systems, applications,
and many business processes throughout the lifetime of an
individual’s relationship with the Institution. For instance,
an individual may start out as a student, return a few years
later as a consultant, decide to complete his/her Master's
Degree, and return again years later as a faculty member.
Regardless of the association/relationship that individual has
with Marshall University, he/she will have/use the same MUID#.
Creating new unique MUID# eliminates using SSNs as the key
identifier in administrative systems and applications
addresses two critical issues. The MUID# provides campus-wide
continuity in identifying all constituents regardless of their
association with Marshall University. By eliminating SSN as the key
identifier in automated systems, Marshall
University is taking another
important step in reducing the risk of identity theft for the
Marshall community.
Effective June 1, 2004, the Marshall University Identification
Number, known as MUID#, will be converted from an SSN based
number to a generated number for all current MU students, faculty, staff,
and affiliates.
New students will be assigned a MUID# when his/her application
is received. When accepted, the student will use this number
as his/her “key” for all administrative transactions,
activities and services provided by MU.
Authorized administrators in several offices will generate
a MUID#
for any new individual as appropriate. The assignment of a
MUID# only constitutes authorization that this individual is
eligible for services appropriate to the type of
relationship they have with the Institution. Once the MUID# is
assigned the normal business process to request/activate
services can be initiated. The new process will really be
beneficial for certain groups such as new faculty. They can
activate computer and email accounts, access library
resources, and other services such as parking before his/her
first real work day. A MUID# must be assigned before an
official Marshall University Identification Card can be issued.
Current MU ID Card holders will need to have their MU ID
Card reissued. Faculty identification cards will be
distributed with the April 30th payroll, staff cards will be
distributed with the May 16th payroll, and student cards are
scheduled to be mailed May 20th. However, the new ID
cards will not be active until June 1st.
