BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES GRADUATE PROGRAM
The Department of Biological Sciences (BSC) at Marshall University is dedicated to student success. We help each graduate student find a program and create a plan of study that is best suited to their career goals. Our graduate students have the option to pursue an MA degree (non-thesis option) or an MS degree (thesis option). The MA degree requires 36 credit hours of graduate coursework, and the MS degree requires 32 credit hours of coursework and thesis research.
BSC graduate faculty members have broad interests and expertise, and we work with faculty members from other departments and colleges to provide our students with flexible, cutting-edge graduate educations. Here are just a few examples:
- MA/MS degrees with an emphasis on biomedical and biomolecular sciences. Students interested in entering medical or other professional schools benefit from the advanced coursework of the MA program. Students who are interested in a research career in molecular biology or biotechnology pursue an MS degree in BSC and can progress to the PhD program in Biomedical Sciences through the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.
- MA/MS degrees with an emphasis on ecology and evolutionary biology. Marshall University has long been recognized as a leading institution in ecological sciences and field biology. Our graduate students have the opportunity to participate in particularly strong programs in herpetology, paleontology and evolutionary biology.
- MA/MS degrees in Watershed Resource Sciences. Our newest graduate program emphasizes Marshall University’s location on the 9th largest river system in the United States, and our outstanding faculty with interests and expertise in aquatic biology. This interdisciplinary program introduces students to aspects of biology, environmental assessment, and law that are particularly applicable to watershed resources. Students complete this area of emphasis by designing a curriculum suited to their interests and career goals.
