Janis Winkfield Scholarship

The Marshall University Black Alumni Association (MUBAA) will honor their Sister of Marshall Janis F. Winkfield by naming an endowed scholarship in her memory.  In the Marshall University employee newsletter (March 24, 2000) the employee profile for the month featured Janis Winkfield.  The opening sentence of this article sums up the spirit of our friend, sister and colleague, “Janis F. Winfield loves learning, helping people, and Marshall. . .”
She spent over twenty years of her life in service to the Marshall University community.  She worked with the Big Green Foundation to host events, was Past President of MUBAA and 2nd Vice President of MUAA.  In these functions she strived to promote the fellowship and spirit she found at MU.
Through her career as Senior Financial Aid Counselor at Marshall, Janis was able to spread her love of learning.  Many students and alumni have her to thank for helping them find the financial assistance to stay in school.
Janis’s profile in the employee newsletter ends with a quote from her, “I owe all of my accomplishments to God, who is the center of my life and I know with him all things are possible, and to my mother and the rest of my family who have always encouraged me to set my goals high and to strive for the best and most important.”
It is most appropriate that she be honored in this way since it was with her guidance in her capacity as Senior Financial Aid Counselor that many students were able to meet their goals and strive for their best.  MUBAA needs to raise $15,000 to endow the scholarship which will allow for a yearly award in Janis’s memory.  You may make a tax deductable donation to this fund through the Marshall University Foundation.
