MS (Research Option) Application, Review Timeline, and Assistantships

Students who wish to enroll in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program must apply for admission through the Graduate Admissions Office and meet the admission requirements of the Graduate College and the Graduate Studies Committee of Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the program.

  • Prerequisite Courses – Applicants to any Biomedical Sciences MS or PhD degree must have a baccalaureate degree with one year of general biology, physics, general chemistry, and organic chemistry, all with associated laboratories. Although biochemistry, calculus and physical chemistry are not requirements for admission, they may be required for certain areas of emphasis and are highly recommended.
  • GRE Scores – There is no minimum GRE score requirement. However, if each section (Verbal and Quantitative) is less than the 50th percentile, that is not looked upon favorably by the admission committee.
  • GPA – 3.0 (4.0 scale)

Domestic Application Process

  1. Online Application – The application code for the MS program is GM500000. If you are certain of what research cluster you would like to pursue, then you are welcome to select from the menu provided on the application. Otherwise, you may select one later in the program. (Note: If you are applying to the Medical Sciences area of emphasis, you are required to choose that at the time of application.)
  2. Application fee ($40) – Be sure you have entered your payment before you click to submit your application.
  3. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test scores – Marshall’s institution code is 5396. No department code is necessary. (Note: Scores may not be more than three (5) years old at the start of the semester when matriculating into the MS program.)
  4. Official transcripts from each college or university previously attended – These must be official and sent directly from the institution’s registrar’s office to Marshall’s Graduate Records and Admissions Office.
  5. Three letters of recommendation from references familiar with the applicant’s relevant academic/professional performance.  Letters may be mailed directly from the writer, or they may be scanned and e-mailed as an attachment as long as they are from the writer, signed and on official letterhead.   6. Written statement – Your statement should include, but not be limited to, your educational and career goals, research experience, and why you are applying to Marshall’s Biomedical Sciences, MS program. International applicants must follow both the specified requirements of the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program and of the Marshall University Admission Office. Before applying, please thoroughly read through the requirements of both programs.

Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program Application Requirements and Points of Emphasis

International applicants to our program must have all of the following submitted through the Admissions Office:

  1. Application fee – The application fee for international students is $150.
  2. Official transcript(s) – Transcripts must be in the original language, accompanied by a certified English translation, and contain ALL college or university academic credits and grades. The transcripts must be sent directly to the Marshall University Admissions office by the Registrar or equivalent at institution that you attended. Course-by-course evaluations of your transcript(s) will be completed by Marshall University Admissions.
  3. Proof of English Language Proficiency – All international applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency. See the Graduate College’s International Admissions webpage for guidelines. Please note that we cannot waive this requirement for any international applicant, and that the BMS Graduate Program does not admit conditionally.
  4. Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) – We require GRE General Test scores. Marshall’s institution code is 5396. No department code is necessary. (Note: Scores may not be more than three (3) years old at the start of the semester when matriculating for the MS program.)

Review Timeline


  • Applications are accepted throughout the year, and applicants are notified of their status on a rolling basis. Applications will be considered until June 1st.
  • The Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine’s Biomedical Sciences Graduate Studies Committee (comprised of research cluster representatives, BMS administration, and at-large members) will review completed application files that are sent to the Program by the Graduate Admissions Office. Unofficial decisions are generally e-mailed by the Director of Biomedical Sciences Graduate Studies within a week of the application review. Official decisions will be sent  approximately within a month, and will come from the Graduate Admissions Office.
  • Acceptance letters from the Director of BMS Graduate Studies will include a recommended deadline date for your response. Please let us know as soon as you have made your decision.

Financial Assistance


There are a limited number of scholarships available for Biomedical Sciences Research MS students. Once accepted into the program, a scholarship application will be sent to the student. The scholarship is the amount of a full year (fall, spring and summer semesters) of in-state tuition and fees for the program, which is currently $11,848.75. Metro, Non-WV residents and international students are eligible for the scholarship but the amount provided will remain the same. Students may apply for the scholarship again to provide for the second year in the amount of $9,273.75. (The second year does not include a summer term, which therefore lowers the cost of tuition and fees.)


The Biomedical Sciences Program does not offer Graduate Assistantships (GA) for the Master’s Program. However, Master’s students are permitted to seek assistantships through a Marshall University department. Full-time GAs (whether teaching, research, or clerical assistants) work a maximum of 20 hours per week and are required to carry a minimum of nine credit hours. Half-time GAs work a maximum of ten hours per week and are permitted to carry a reduced course load (if permitted by program and advisor).
