
Phi Theta Kappa is the academic honor society for two-year colleges. It has been in existence since 1918 and is the largest and one of the most prestigious honor societies in higher education, with more than 1.2 million members.
Phi Theta Kappa membership is based primarily upon academic achievement. Local chapters on college campuses extend invitations to membership to qualified students. Initiations are conducted in the spring and fall for new members. General requirements include (1) enrollment in an accredited institution with two-year degree programs, (2) completion of at least 12 hours of coursework toward an associate degree, and (3) a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Part-time students are also eligible for membership.
