The governing spirit of the Marshall University Society of Black Scholars is to provide a strong foundation for personal growth and optimum achievement, through a supportive network of nurturing experiences for academically advanced African American students. The Society aspires to support the efforts of participating students towards high academic achievements, character and professional development, leadership skills, professional maturity and service in preparation as future leaders and scholars in our global society.

Eligibility/Admission
African American students seek
membership by submitting an application and one Letter of Recommendation from a
university administrator or faculty. Students seeking admission must be
enrolled as full time students and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater.
Membership is maintained upon completing a minimum of 24 semester hours each
academic year, maintaining a 3.0 cum. GPA or greater, attending required events
faithfully, volunteer service, and displaying character that is consistent with
ambitious and goal-oriented scholars.
Formal
consideration for admission to the Society occurs twice each academic year,
once in the fall and again in the spring semester. This
consists of applicant reviews and fairly intensive interviews by upperclass student members.
Experiences and Programs
Society members are required to
attend monthly business meetings. Semester events may include attending special
lectures, art and cultural performances, participating in educational travel
outings and participating in various other growth and development experiences.
All students will receive personal and academic advising from the Director.
The Society of Black Scholars at Marshall is a prestigious
organization and highly recognized in the local community and throughout the
academic environment. Founded in the fall of 2003, our graduates have enrolled
in and are now in the process of completing law schools, medical schools,
forensic chemistry graduates studies, biotechnology, chiropractic, MBA schools,
leadership studies, and various other graduate and professional schools.
