The Center for African American Students' Programs is the catalyst for involving African American students individually and collectively
in university life and to facilitate the encouragement of majority students to participate in activities as well as learn about racial
and ethnic differences. The CAASP's objectives are:
-
To maintain and broaden a comprehensive information system that will inform students and the university community of services and programs.
-
To assist in the development of black students academic, leadership, organizational, and personal skills.
-
To assist in raising the university community's racial consciousness, awareness, sensitivity, and development.
-
To enhance African American students' potential for improved self-understanding and awareness of their impact on the environment.
-
To discover ways to help students to relate to new demands and challenges in our society.
In 1977, the Student Relation Center was renamed and the units of Minority, Women's, and International Students programs were identified
with supervision being provided by the Director of Human Relations, within the Division of Student Affairs.
Reorganization in the Division of Student Affairs in 1978 created individual coordinators for the Minority Students, Women's Center, and
International Students Programs. The coordinator of the Minority Students' Program served as advisor to the Black United Students' (BUS),
Mass Choir, and Black Greek Organizations. The Associate Dean for Student Affairs supervised all Human Relation Center units.
In the fall term of the 1991-1992 academic year, the Minority Students Programs Office name was changed to the African American Students'
Programs Office, to better reflect the student population that utilized the services. Major reorganization took place in 1992 and the Center
for African American Students' Programs moved under the Division of Multicultural and International Programs. The supervisor of the
African American Students' Programs Office became the Associate Vice President for Multicultural Affairs/Coordinator of Center for
African American Student's Programs who also has responsibilities for the Upward Bound Program.
In the spring of 1996-1997 the name changed to Center for African American Students' Programs. Although the emphasis is to assist African
American students, the multicultural/diversity goals of the Marshall University mission statement is an integral part of the program's
philosophy and objectives.
