Relay Herdstock '08
February 21, 2008
Story by: Brandee Marion
Junior - Psychology
Take a trip back to the 1960s this spring with Marshall University’s Relay for Life 2008. This year, students are evoking the politically-charged atmosphere of the 1960s by promoting advocacy. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of 1960s-related activities, such as tie-dyeing t-shirts. Many students are forming teams for the Relay event, including Honors organizations such as Gamma Beta Phi, Psi Chi, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Teams work together to raise money for the American Cancer Society, which uses the money for cancer research and to provide services to individuals with cancer. Marshall University’s annual Relay for Life event will take place from 6:00pm on Friday, April 18, until 6:00am on Saturday, April 19. For more information about the Relay event or to join a team, students may visit the event website at www.events.cancer.org/rflmarshalluniversity. Student Body President Dominique Elmore, who attended last year’s Relay, said, “It was a wonderful event. It was good to come together for the cause of finding a cure for cancer. It was a lot of fun, and I encourage people to attend. I hope it’s as fun this year as it was last year!”

Spicing Up Spring Break
February 21, 2008
Want to spend Spring Break 2008 traveling Europe, laying on the beach, or making a difference in the lives of others? Marshall University Honors students interested in learning and helping others have several Spring Break opportunities available to them through Marshall’s many campus organizations. The Office of Student Activities is sponsoring its annual Spring Break trip to Europe. At a cost of $2,297, students will travel to London, Oxford, Paris, Madrid and Toledo. With bilingual tour directors, daily European meals, sightseeing tours, and visits to special attractions, the trip is sure to expose students to European culture and bring to life the many historical sights in England, France and Spain. On March 22, Campus Crusade for Christ will travel to Panama City, Florida for a week of worship and evangelism. Along with students from other major universities, Marshall students will enjoy the sites and sounds of the top-ranked Spring Break destination in the world, as voted on by the Travel Channel. Students will spend the week attending worship services, receiving evangelism training, and sharing their faith with others. Flood, an organization unique to Marshall University, will spend Spring Break helping the citizens of hurricane-ravaged New Orleans. On March 25, students will travel to the Big Easy where they will spend three days tearing down and cleaning up homes and buildings destroyed during the 2005 hurricane season. These are only a few of the many opportunities available to students at Marshall University. Though Spring Break may serve as a time of leisure for some college students, several campus groups are using it as an opportunity to better themselves and the world around them. Don’t waste your Spring Break doing something ordinary; make it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

I am even more surprised to be a finalist for the prize,” Miller said. “It’s not something I ever expected or pursued on my own.”

No summer plans? Be an intern!
February 20, 2008
This summer, picture yourself at the ultimate vacation destination, all while experiencing an internship of a lifetime. Summer internships are found in virtually any place you want to go, and are a great way to build up anyone’s credentials whether you plan to go to graduate school, medical school, or directly enter the workforce after earning your undergraduate degree. Of the numerous internships available, several are offered through Marshall to Honors students. One such internship is the Arizona Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Summer Student Program, which is geared toward pre-medical students. Another internship available is the Washington Center- Washington D.C./London Internship Program, which includes the Study Abroad experience and can be tailored to students with many different interests. The deadlines to apply to most summer internships are usually around late February/March. Above all, when considering the possibilities, always remember that internships should not only be a learning experience, they should be fun too. For more information about these and many other great internships go to www.azheartfoundation.org, www.twc.edu/students/london.shtml, and http://scholarships.fatomei.com/internships.html.

October 16, 2007
Being an Honors student is much more than just taking seminars. Marshall University’s Honors Student Association (MUHSA) provides a great social network for Honors students. This organization allows students to interact in a relaxed atmosphere and participate in fun activities. So far this semester, MUHSA members have attended the MU production of Little Shop of Horrors, watched a movie, and gone bowling together. They have several other fun events, including a game night and a renaissance fair, being considered for the future. MUHSA also hopes to have an activity with the Upward Bound program.
