PARENTS CAREER EXPLORATION

Choosing a career can be a challenging task for students, but with work and time they can find a career path. Ideally, students’ career choices should fit with their interests, natural abilities, personality, and students walking old main-smith hallvalues. If students aren't sure what these are, career assessments, working while in school, volunteering, or joining student organizations and other activities will help them learn more about their likes and dislikes.

The next step is for students to identify several career options that may match their interests, abilities, personality, and values. Then, research these careers to learn more. Identify the nature of the work, typical tasks, and salaries. Is a graduate degree, professional degree, or certification required? What majors might lead to this field? However, many career fields don't require a particular major. Lots of people end up working in positions with little relation to their undergraduate major. Students may do this by going to graduate/professional school or by learning the field "on the job," little by little.

Do you know a student that would benefit from speaking to a Career Advisor? The Career Center can help a student in all stages of the career exploration and decision-making process. Please feel free to refer students exploring careers to our office. They can make appointment by calling 304-696-2370.

CAREER ASSESSMENT

For students unsure of which major or career path to choose, career assessments may assist any student in answering questions and determining potential future occupations. In addition, upperclassmen may take career inventories to locate suitable work environments and industries based on temperaments, values, interests and skills. Available Assessments:

  • SDS (Self Directed Search): A 30-minute assessment that suggests specific occupations based on the assessment results
  • SIGI3: This assessment assists in suggesting suitable career possibilities by measuring and evaluating values, interests and activities. This is a computerized, self-guided program and can be accessed online any time and is free to Marshall students and alumni.
