JOB SEARCH PREPARATION

CAREER EXPOS career_expo

Throughout the academic year, Marshall University Career Services hosts career expos for students to find prospective employers and for local businesses to find quality employees. When attending a career fair, students should come dressed in appropriate attire with several copies of their resume. The goal of these expos is for students to talk with employers for a few minutes about their educational background, experience, and interest in the position. They should also research the employers they are interested in talking to and have questions prepared about the positions.

COVER LETTERS

Along with resumes, Marshall University Career Services advisors can help with any questions students may have regarding cover letters. Students can make an appointment with a career advisor to write a cover letter for a specific job. Cover letters are a fundamental way to introduce oneself to an employer and should be included with every submitted resume. A few points to consider are: small pdf icon

  • Neatness and correctness are crucial. Employers will reject disorganized and error laden cover letters first.
  • Always address your cover letter to a specific person. If you are not sure who that person should be, contact the company to request that person’s name and title.
  • Your cover letter should be brief and concise by limiting its length to one page. It should emphasize a few accomplishments, but its main purpose is to let the employer know you are interested and wish to meet for an interview.
