Activities

Teaching and Learning Workshops:  Programs will be offered for faculty development in teaching and learning throughout the academic year. Workshop presenters may be nationally recognized faculty developers or experts from Marshall University’s faculty. All programs are free and available to full time and part time faculty, staff, TA’s, students, and community guests. 


New Faculty Orientation: Together with the Office of Academic Affairs, CTL participates in the planning and implementation of New Faculty Orientation and the New Faculty Seminars, the introductory programs for newly hired faculty with emphasis on teaching and learning. 


New Faculty Seminars: Throughout the Fall Semester, CTL partners with the Office of Academic Affairs to offer a series of seminars for new faculty.  Topics include course design, syllabus development, student learning objectives, and assessment measures, among others.


Research Boot Camp:  During the Spring Semester, CTL sponsors a series of workshops designed to provide new faculty with the structure and support they need to focus on their academic research.  Participants commit to attend all sessions and are accountable to their peers with regard to their writing/research goals.  Guest speakers will attend to provide advice and assistance on a variety of topics.


The DaVinci Roundtable:  An interdisciplinary exchange, co-sponsored by CTL and the Office of Academic Affairs, designed to encourage faculty to think critically about their teaching, and to provide a forum for discussion of teaching related topics.  


Fall Teaching Conference:  A one-and-a-half day conference with sessions addressing a wide variety of teaching related topics designed to support faculty development at every level.  Sessions are conducted by Marshall faculty for Marshall faculty.  


The Hedrick Program Awards: This unrestricted grant is given annually to a department, program, or college to implement innovative changes in teaching or assessment across the curriculum. The size of the award varies up to $5,000.00. 


Library Resources: CTL has an ever-expanding lending library of books on a wide variety of teaching related issues. Books can be borrowed for periods of one month.  Books are available in the CTL office, Old Main 109 and a list is available at http://www.marshall.edu/CATL/booklist.asp.


Faculty Supporting Faculty:  Upon request CTL can arrange for mentoring and peer assistance programs. Depending upon interest, these activities can include faculty writing groups, journal clubs, new faculty mentoring, and other kinds of peer support.


Classroom Observation and Feedback: Upon request, CTL will provide classroom observation of individual faculty members. Helpful, constructive feedback is provided in a confidential format. The criteria for the observation can be individually tailored to meet faculty needs. This service cannot be used for tenure and promotion applications although peer feedback can be helpful in improving teaching/learning. Video taping of classroom performance is also available upon request. 


Sabbatical Application Support: Advice and consultation is available for faculty in the preparation and presentation of effective sabbatical leave applications.
