Hedrick Program Grant for Teaching Innovation
The Faculty Development Office in the Center for Teaching and Learning annually
funds an award of up to $5,000 for a project that supports innovations in teaching
at the program level. Proposals are due Wednesday, May 15, 2014 at 12 noon,
and must be emailed as a Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF attachment to email@example.com.
Eligibility: The Primary Investigator (PI) must be a tenured or
tenure-track full-time faculty member in any department or college that reports
to Academic Affairs. Administrators at the rank of Dean or above may not apply.
Submission: Each proposal should not exceed three single-spaced,
typed pages, and must include the following:
- Contact information: Primary investigator’s
name, title, department, college, email, and phone number; plus names/departments
of co-investigators. (Note: The grant is awarded to a program or to a cross-disciplinary
collaboration, not to an individual.)
- Project goal/objectives: Two to three
sentences or bullet points. Please remember that this grant funds innovative activity
at the program level. Projects focused primarily on the development of a single
course by a single professor are ineligible for this grant.
- Description of project: Include 1)
a description of the innovative pedagogies that support the objectives of the project,
as well as 2) a description of the program-level impact of the project. Innovative
pedagogies include but are not limited to: student engagement in the community,
problem-based learning, case study methods, field experiences/experiments, strategies
that enhance student/teacher interaction and collaboration, new approaches to evaluating
student performance or measuring learning outcomes, interdisciplinary partnerships
or learning communities that link students across two or more courses, etc.
- Procedures and timeline for implementation:
Projects may run up to one year (July 1 through June 30). Procedures and proposed
timeline should be feasible.
- Expected Outcomes: Describe how the
project is expected to improve student learning.
- Project Assessment: Explain how expected
outcomes will be measured/assessed. Methods should be appropriate to the outcomes.
- Budget: Include full project budget,
even if expenses exceed $5,000. Note specifically which expenditures will be covered
by Hedrick Program Grant funds. Funds may be used to pay faculty, staff or GA stipends;
travel; supplies or equipment; or honoraria for internal or external consultants.
- Plan for dissemination of the project:
Grant recipients are required to submit a project evaluation report (including assessment
results) by September 1 following the grant year. Grant recipients are also expected
to present the project outcomes to colleagues upon completion of the project, including
the annual iPED: Inquiring Pedagogies teaching conference at Marshall University.
