Pre-conference Field Trip

The 2014 Geohazards in Transportation in the Appalachian Region pre-conference field trip will be on August 5th. The field trip will look at the geology, history, and geohazards of the Pine Mountain, Cumberland Gap, and Middlesboro area of southeastern Kentucky. The highlight of the trip will be visiting the Cumberland Gap Tunnel. The mountain tunnel is located along US 25 where Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia converge. Many geotechnical issues were encountered during construction, and mitigation efforts continue today.  Other field trip stops include Chain Rock in Pineville, Kentucky, Pinnacle Overlook in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, and an iron furnace in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee.

Field Trip Schedule for August 5, 2014
