Current Activities

  • Principal Investigator: R&D in multi-sensor technologies to assess and evaluate rail track surface and sub-surface, funded by the Federal Rail Administration: In collaboration with the Nick. J. Rahall Transportation Institute.
  • Chair of The Appalachian States Coalition for Geological Hazards (Geohazards) in Transportation.
  • Co-Director the West Virginia Water Resource Management Program, with the West Virginia University Water Research Institute and West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.

Environmental Manager
Responsibilities:
  • Manager of Environmental Management Incubator, providing assistance to regional small businesses in regulatory compliance and permitting, pollution prevention (waste minimization, energy management, recycling/re-use), and new technology development in the environmental arena.
  • Environmental Specialist providing environmental and safety oversight on various CEGAS projects.

Current Activities:

  • PI on assessing and updating various safety programs with the National Park Service New River Gorge National Park.
  • PI on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Formerly Used Defense Sites contracts, providing assistance and/or oversight on web development, GIS development, public presentations, and community surveys.
  • PI on Economic Development Administration grant to develop GIS viewer tools specific to West Virginia local and regional economic developers.

Justin Chapman

Research Assistant

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the VISE team to develop training and simulation materials.
  • Develop, modify, evaluate, utilize, and deploy visualization and other software for the VISE project and visualization lab.
  • Help manage and oversee the visualization lab and activities held within.
  • Assist CEGAS personnel and outside parties with visualization related capabilities.

Current Activities:

  • Working with a West Virginia certified mine instructor Randy Massey and the VISE team to develop and pilot virtual training material for required annual mine safety refresher training.

Mark Lewis

Responsibilities:
  • Assign and direct the work of computer programmers, support specialists, and other computer-related workers.  

Current activities:

  • Currently developing West Virginia large quantity water users Information System.
  • Assist technical lead for the development of the VISE (Virtual Interactive Simulation Environment) lab.
  • Maintains website for the Huntington District of US Corps of Engineers’ DERP-FUDS projects. 
  • Provides in-house technical support.  Administers file and web servers for CEGAS.

Research Assistant
Responsibilities:
  • Technical lead for the development of the VISE (Virtual Interactive Simulation Environment) lab.
  • Application of VISE to mine safety training and areas of special interest to Marshall University and the local community.
  • Economic development associated with VISE.

Current activities:

  • Survey, evaluate, select and implement technologies for the VISE lab.
  • Lead the construction of virtual and simulated real environments for VISE applications, especially for mine safety training.
  • Explore and foster opportunities for new business development derived from VISE technologies and it's applications.

GIS Manager
Responsibilities:
  • Manage various GIS research and service projects for CEGAS.
  • Oversee and train GIS staff.
  • Teach graduate level and undergraduate level courses in GIS and Engineering.

Current activities:

  • Restoration and Advisory Board (RAB) Support for Huntington District of US Corps of Engineers.
  • GIS support for Infrastructure Evaluation, Analysis and Integration for Multi-County Development Project for EDA.
  • GIS & Web Support for DERP-FUDS Projects for Huntington District of US Corps of Engineers.
