Hydroponics Room: Dr. Elizabeth Murray piloted a NASA-supported study in hydroponics using
strawberry because of its potential for cultivation in space. This hydroponics system
was established during the winter in the Marshall University greenhouse based on successful methods pioneered by
Dr. F. Takeda, USDA Appalachian Fruit Research Station (ARS), Kearneysville, WV.
Strawberry has a preference for short day length (10-14 hr) and cool temperatures (50-65° F) which lend it to cultivation in the MU greenhouse in late fall
and spring semesters.
