The Center for International Programs was established in 1993. Its mission is to assist in internationalizing Marshall University and the surrounding community through a coordinated effort. The Center contributes to one of the primary missions of Marshall University – to educate a citizenry capable of living and working in a global environment.

Marshall University’s mission statement lists international education as one of our top priorities. Marshall University is committed to infusing an international dimension into our teaching, learning, research and service.

The administrative offices of the Center are located in Old Main 320 with classrooms on the ground floor of the Morrow Library building. The Executive Director of the Center, Dr. Clark Egnor, reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs. The Center’s focus includes:

Community and Campus Outreach
Working with government, education, business, campus and community to offer programs such as the Language Buffet, the Homestay Program (for Spring, Fall and Winter Break Only), the Language Bank, the Dual Credit Japanese and Chinese language programs at Huntington High School and Cabell Midland in Cabell County, the Chinese Language Program at Sissonville High School in Kanawha County, and the International Festival.

Office of International Student Admissions and Recruitment
Conducting admissions for undergraduate, graduate and ESL programs and providing limited academic advising for international students. The Office recruits students from all over the world utilizing print advertisement, student fairs, website marketing and partnerships with other higher education institutions and networks. International student enrollment in Fall 2006 was 410 students from 53 countries, almost 50% increase since 2000. Visit the Office of International Admissions website here.

Study Abroad Office
Assisting students to study abroad for a summer, a semester, or a year to provide an understanding of other cultures and earn academic credit toward their Marshall University degree. The Office secures relationships with institutions in other countries to provide locations to exchange both students and faculty, including exchanges and articulation agreements with institutions in Japan, South Korea, China, Cyprus, India, United Kingdom, Spain, France, New Zealand, and Mexico.

Cooperative International Research
Seeking opportunities with universities in other countries to cooperatively conduct research; assisting academic departments to locate grant funding to provide international graduate teaching assistants and visiting professors and exchange opportunities for students and faculty.

International GA Internship Program (IGAI)
Operating an internship program that prepares graduate students through on-the-job training and seminars. Visit the IGAI website here.

Office of International Student and Scholar (ISAS)
Providing international services to students and faculty at Marshall University, including immigration advising and compliance, orientation, student activities, and assisting all University departments/divisions who wish to invite international faculty and research scholars to join their programs on a temporary basis. English as a Second Language Institute (ESLI)
Providing several ESL services to the University, including the L.E.A.P. (Learning English for Academic Purposes) Intensive English Program, English proficiency assessment, short-term customized English programs, and the International Conversation Partners Program.

China Projects
Operating the Appalachians Abroad Teach in China Program to prepare individuals with the necessary teaching skills along with the linguistic and cultural competencies for living and teaching in the People’s Republic of China.

Global Green Scholarship Fund
This annual fund develops support for international education at Marshall University. Funds go to support scholarship costs for international education and also support activities that create a global awareness, such as the annual International Festival.

International Education Week
The Annual International Festival kicks off International Week at Marshall University in November. In addition to the International Festival, the week includes the Festival of Flags, Study Abroad Fair and more. Visit the International Fesitval website.
