COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An introductory course that explores the relationship between engineering and fire prevention.  Topics for discussion will include:  sprinkler systems, water supplies, behavior and nature of fire, materials, fire protection and extinguishers.

DESIRED LEARNER OUTCOMES:

By the end of the course, the student should have enough knowledge to be able to pass the fire protection area of the Certified Safety Professional exam.  Additionally, the student will understand the value and necessity of fire protection within the industrial setting.

GRADING POLICY:

Over the course of the semester, there will be a total of four (4) examinations given, worth a variety of points.  And a final examination which will cover highlights of the semester.  All examinations will consist of True and False; Multiple Choice; Short Answer and Mathematical Problems.  I use a standard 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% grading system.  All materials for the examinations will come from the text book and lecture/homework assignments.

Graduate students will have additional work.

POLICY STATEMENT:

Within the schedule, all due dates are posted.  Assignments will be given to you with plenty of time necessary to complete them.  They will be due when stated.  Make up exams generally will not be given unless you have a valid excuse.  A university excused absence is valid, a death or sickness is valid.  Please call before you miss class if you know.  Returning late from a vacation or break is not valid.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

I do take attendance.  While you will not get any extra points, good attendance will help your final grade when I tally all the points up.  If you are a point or two away from a higher grade, I will generally give the student that edge.  However, since we are only meeting one day a week, if you miss several classes, it may result in a lower grade.  Excessive absences will cause you to miss important information and in our field, that information just might save your life or someone else’s.
