Problem Report

CREDIT:          1-3 Hours graduate

 

GENERAL FORMAT

 

REQUIREMENTS OF COURSE:

 

            The student will be responsible for a comprehensive written report using a research methodology, following a proposal approved by the instructor for such a study.  The report “term paper” will be submitted on time, near the end of the current semester.  The student is expected to hold a minimum of five conferences with the instructor to insure the quality of the paper.

 

            The problem report term paper must follow the exact format given in the outline below:

 

I.                    Synopsis of the Safety Problem

 

A.     This is the first heading within the paper and the introduction of the nature of why the problem exists.  (Must be 4 – 5 typed pages)

 

II.                 Statement of the Problem

 

A.     This section will generally be no longer than a single paragraph that summarizes the problem statement in one sentence.

 

            Example: There exists today a continued need for safety training in the work place.  The problem is convincing the workers to participate.

 

III.               Analysis of the Problem

 

A.     There maybe several symptoms or situations that have led to the causal factor of the stated problem.  It is the students task to discuss these issues thoroughly and state them in the paper as the single most contributing factor of the problem statement.

 

B.     This section should contain at least 8 typed pages documented by footnotes where profound open-ended statements are made that need the support of research.

 

 

 

C.     Follow the guidelines for research paper preparation as stated on page one of this syllabus.

 

IV.              Alternatives

 

A.     These are credible means that the student must defend as methodology to correct the safety problem as stated in Part II of the outline.

 

B.     Credible means are accepted methods from experts in the field of safety through which implementation would minimize risk to an acceptable level in the auspices of society.

 

C.     This section must contain a minimum of 4 alternatives (excellent papers generally contain 5 or more alternatives) that are credible, resourceful uses of information.

 

D.     The student in the final part of this section must choose one of all the credible alternatives as the best method to pursue in correcting the problem statement in section II.  (Section IV should be al least 12 typed pages documented by reference).

 

V.                 Recommendations and Conclusions

 

A.     The final section must reflect back on the entire paper.  The student must make specific recommendations for readers to follow when applying aforesaid techniques, theories or methodology to correct the stated safety problems.

 

B.     Conclusions must draw upon specific facts that identify the problem report with the socially responsible movement that a modern safety professional encounters daily.

Student Requirement:

 

            Student(s) will select a topic upon which to render a formal written report.  Topic must be approved by the instructor.

 

 

 

            Requirement One:

 

            Provide the instructor with a table of contents, or topic outline of agreed problem.  When content is approved,

 

            Requirement Two:

 

            Prepare the paper and submit to the instructor. Paper should be a “camera-ready” copy.  Such paper may be reproduced and provided to other class members, or other interested parties.
