Scholarships and Awards at CITE

There are numerous scholarships available to Marshall University undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the following students won CITE awards for the 2007-2008 school year.

• AREMA Educational Foundation Scholarship
  The AREMA Educational Foundation offers scholarships to students pursuing engineering degrees who are both graduate and undergraduate students, married students or those supporting families, full-time students and part-time students who are working full-time in the railway. • Appalachian Leadership and Education Foundation Scholarship
  For incoming freshmen. Full tuition, fees, room and board, and books will be provided to the scholarship winners. Applicants must be West Virginia residents, have at least a 2.8 GPA, and exhibit character and leadership. Please click here for application and other information. (February 15 Deadline)
• ASSE Foundation Scholarships
  The American Society of Safety Engineers offers over $100,000 in scholarships through their foundation.
• Brickstreet Insurance Scholarship/Internship for Safety Technology
  Brickstreet Insurance has set up a combination scholarship/internship program with the Safety program at Marshall University. To be eligible for the scholarship:
  1. The applicant must be a Sophomore, Junior, Senior or Graduate student in the Safety program at Marshall University.
  2. The applicant must have a GPA of at least 3.00 in all safety classes. If you are unsure of your GPA in SFT courses, contact Elizabeth Hanrahan at hanrahan@marshall.edu
  3. The candidate selected to receive the scholarship is required to accept a paid 24 hours per week flexible schedule internship at Brickstreet. The current pay rate is $10.00 per hour. If the scholarship is awarded for the fall semester then the internship is in the following spring. The internship is for the summer if the scholarship is awarded for the spring semester.
  Interested students should send a one page letter of interest stating why they want the scholarship and why they deserve it and a copy of their resume to Jim McIntosh at mcintoshj@marshall.edu no later than the first Monday in June prior to the start of the academic year. Residents of West Virginia will be given priority.
• Contractor's Association of West Virginia Scholarship
  Recipient is selected by the CAWV Scholarship Committee.
• CSX Diversity Scholarship
  Annual scholarship award of $1000 - $2000 is offered to support academic achievement and promote transportation career opportunities. All applicants will also be considered for internship and co-op employment opportunities. Learn more and apply online here.
• Engineers Club of Huntington Endowed Scholarship
  Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee composed of the Marshall Engineering faculty and the Executive Board of the Engineers Club of Huntington. Selection is based on the potential of recipients to become practicing engineers. To be eligible, students must have completed one year of coursework.

• EPA Marshall Scholarships
  These scholarships for study abroad in the UK are available to students pursuing graduate degrees in fields relating to environmental protection.
• Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation Scholarship
  Preference is given to Environmental Science majors and graduate students.
• Higher Education Adult Part-time Student Grant Program
  Intended for needy West Virginia students who have been out of high school for at least two years and want to continue their education on a part-time basis at the post-secondary level.
• Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program
  Sophomore students majoring in disciplines related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, or education, and supportive of the purposes of NOAA's programs and mission (e.g., biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; and teacher education) are encouraged to apply for a scholarship from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings scholarship program. Student must have official Junior status in the fall semester. The deadline for applications is February 8.

  NOAA also has a website, Student Opportunities, that contains scholarship, internship, and fellowship information for high school students, undergraduates, graduates, and post-docs.

• Joseph A. Holmes Scholarship Program
  If you are currently employed at a mine, if you are related to someone who works at a mine, or if you are pursuing a career in the mining industry or any health-related field you may qualify for this a Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association scholarship. More information is available on this U.S. Department of Labor web page.
• Kalayci Family Scholarship
  Due to the generosity of Tanzer Kalayci, P.E. (BES, ’62), undergraduate engineering and computer science students now have additional opportunities to earn financial assistance during their sophomore, junior and senior years of study.

  The scholarship is available to full-time undergraduate students in CITE who have completed the freshman year. Recipients of the scholarship, to be selected by the Dean upon recommendation from the Division Chair, must be residents of Cabell, Lincoln, Mason or Wayne counties, and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Awards are renewable for up to three years (or six semesters), provided that the recipients maintain good academic standing.

• Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the International Erosion Control Association (MAC-IECA)
  This organization is offering scholarships to students pursuing a program of study associated with erosion and sediment control. See their scholarship web page for more information.
• NASA Space Grant Scholarships
  $1,000 scholarships are available for undergraduate and graduate students interested in a career in science, mathematics, health care, engineering, science education, or working on a NASA related science or teaching research project.
• NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program
  The National Science Foundation has 900 research fellowships available for graduate students in science, mathematics, and engineering. Awards are also available for women in engineering and information science.
• James Marvin Peters Scholarship
  Recipients of this scholarship, to be selected by the CITE Dean in cooperation with the Office of Student Financial Assistance, must be a full-time undergraduate engineering major in CITE who has demonstrated financial need and academic achievement. First preference is given to qualified graduating seniors of any high school in Wayne County, WV. The scholarship may be renewed for up to a total award of four years (eight semesters) if full-time status and satisfactory academic achievement are maintained.

  This scholarship was established by Mr. Peters, who graduated from Ceredo-Kenova High School in 1952. He received his Bachelor degree in Engineering Science from Marshall in 1959 and an MS degree in Aerospace-Mechanical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in 1966. He worked at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base for 31 years between 1959 and 1990. He then went on to graduate from Clark State Community College in Ohio in 1993 with an Associate’s degree in Accounting. He retired as VP of Finance and CFO from C&N Industrial Contractors in Springfield, Ohio in 2004.

• Providing Real Opportunities for Maximizing In-state Student Excellence (PROMISE) Program
  Merit-based scholarship for high school graduates with a 3.0 or greater GPA and a SAT combined score of 1000 or above or ACT composite score of 21 or more.
• Society of American Military Engineers (SAME)
  Recipient is selected by the SAME Scholarship Committee. The application deadline is February 4, 2008. Application form in Word or PDF format.
• SMC Electrical Products Scholarship in Technology Management
  The recipient must be a graduate level student accepted in the Technology Management program. Consideration is given to individuals who are currently employed in manufacturing and in need of expanding their skills in management and technology to assure their businesses are competitive in a global environment. First priority for selection will be given to employees of SMC Electrical Products.

  This scholarship was established in honor of Herbert L. Eaton, past Chairman of the Board of Directors of SMC Electrical Products.

• West Virginia Engineering, Science, and Technology Scholarship Program
  Students working toward a degree or certificate in engineering, science, or technology may be eligible.
• West Virginia Engineers
  The West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers and the West Virginia Association of Consulting Engineers are accepting applications for their scholarship program for third and fourth year West Virginia engineering students. The application deadline is February 7.
