Course Description:             Methodologies of analyzing safety performance and evaluation for accident prevention and control.

Course Objectives:           The functions of safety are fourfold: 1) to analyze, 2) to develop plans, 3) to communicate those plans to the frontline personnel, and 4) to monitor the change.  This course will provide basic understanding of these three areas of analysis:  the physical, the managerial, and the behavioral.  All of these are important, and all must be included if the analysis is to be valid.

Grading Policy:                     Written Assignment*                         30%

                                                Oral Presentation**                             20%

                                                Course Examination(s)*** 50%

* Written Assignment:       Each student/team will be assigned a specific industry type to audit.  The audit will be a "paper audit" with given parameters.  These assigned parameters will include audit methodology to employ, management types to consider, and hazards to address.  Each paper should address all aspects of the audit with emphasis on expected hazards and suggested corrective measures.  The text and class lectures should be the prime reference.  Extra credit will be given for field interviews used to compile the paper.  The paper should be a minimum of 12 pages in length (not including the required cover page and bibliography.) - no greater than a #12 font, type written, standard margins, and no greater than 1.5 line spacing.

** Oral Presentation:           A 10 minute oral presentation with visual aids is required on the assigned date.  The presentation will summarize the content of the written assignment.  Credit will be given for visuals and creativity.  Credit will be subtracted for reading the paper in lieu of presenting the paper.

*** Course Exams:              Exams (no more than 2) will be given during the course covering either lecture material, textbook material, or both.  Lecture material will not always follow the course outline. Absences from exams will be accepted if accompanied with a physician’s statement. A make up quiz will be offered with different content in such excused absences.

Attendance Policy:              Unexcused absences of more than two (2) sessions may result in lowering of the                                                  final course grade.
