Catalogue Description:

 

An analysis of the educational philosophies and the application of these philosophies to occupational safety.  A study of the effect of occupational safety on modern living.

 

Purpose of the Course:

 

The purpose of this course is to provide insights into the philosophical and psychological styles of people who impact upon safety programs and efforts.  It is also designed to assist the student in recognizing/forming his/her own philosophy of safety.  Students will employ a critical thought process in examining various philosophical styles used in the workplace.  From this examination, the student will be in a position to clarify/adjust his/her own philosophical/psychological style in interacting with people in the workplace.  Students will explore arguments and theories in order to make interdisciplinary connections and generate/assess human thought and behavior.

 

Attendance Policy:

 

Unexcused absences in excess of two may result in the lowering of your final grade.  Excused absences will not count in the above total, providing course work is made up.

Attendance is taken in all of my courses.

 

Grading Policy:

 

I generally use a 90%, 80%, 70% system when determining your grade.  All points are added together to arrive at the final percentage score and then you are given a grade.  In the event that you receive an Incomplete grade, I will automatically lower your score by one full grade when you take the I off the record.

 

You will be graded on the following:

 

                        Written Assignments

                        Oral Presentations/Defenses

                        Professors Appraisal

                        Final Examination

 

Course Procedure:

 

1.      Students will read and familiarize themselves with sufficient psychology and

philosophy texts which will allow them to actively participate in discussions

of concepts.

 

2.      Students will be required to write their own philosophy of Occupational

Safety. 

 

3.      Read the text and be prepared to discuss values, beliefs and consequences

Of  the authors position as it may effect safety in American business.
