Over the past decade, technological advances have dramatically changed how credit unions operate. Paper, given its inherent inefficiencies, is a prime target for replacement through technology. The ultimate goal of any technology employed is to improve credit union performance. Improving credit union performance is gained through two methods: (1) by improving productivity and (2) by enhancing member service. This paper provides a plan and necessary background information for implementing paper-reducing technologies.
To accomplish this, the author has provided a generic implementation plan that can be used to successfully implement any technology. Secondly, the author conducted research and an extensive survey on the current status of the primary paper-reducing technologies: e-mail, groupware, Intranet, COLD, and document imaging. A chapter devoted to each technology provides a technology definition, a detailed description of how the technology works, the business advantages and disadvantages, identification of the potential costs, identification of the current suppliers, the current status within the credit union industry, the forecast of the technology, and advice for successfully implementing the specific technology.
The conclusion is that implementing paper-reducing technologies can indeed improve credit union performance by improving productivity and enhancing member service. The best way to implement a new technology is by using a written implementation plan.
